Privacy policy
Research OS is a productivity app for academics and researchers. It was designed so that your information never has to leave your computer. This page explains exactly what the app stores and what it does not do.
What the app stores
Research OS keeps the following information in the app's local storage on your device, so that it is there the next time you open the app:
- the tasks you enter (text, priority, optional due date, completion state),
- the daily habits you enter and the days you marked them as done,
- the focus sessions you complete (date and length),
- your settings (the name you choose to be greeted with, timer lengths, theme, sound and notification preferences).
All of this stays on the device where you entered it. It is not uploaded, synchronised or backed up anywhere by the app.
What the app does not do
- No account, sign-in or registration is required or offered.
- No personal data is collected, transmitted or sold. The app has no server of its own.
- No analytics, advertising or tracking libraries are included.
- No access to your files, contacts, camera, microphone or location is requested.
Notifications
If you turn on "Show a Windows notification", the app asks Windows (or your browser) for permission to display notifications. These are generated locally on your device when a focus session or break ends. You can turn them off at any time in the app's settings or in Windows Settings.
Backups you create
"Export backup" writes a JSON file containing your tasks, habits, sessions and settings to a location you choose (usually your Downloads folder). That file is under your control; the app never sends it anywhere. "Restore backup" reads such a file back into the app.
Deleting your data
Use Settings › Your data › Erase all data to delete everything the app stores. Uninstalling the app also removes its local storage.
Microsoft Store
When you obtain Research OS from the Microsoft Store, the download, installation and any usage statistics shown to the developer in aggregate are handled by Microsoft under the Microsoft Privacy Statement. The app itself adds no data collection of its own.
Children
Research OS is a general-audience productivity tool for university staff and students. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever changes in a way that affects your privacy, this page and the app's Store listing will be updated and the effective date above will change.
